Reviews

Multiple Five Star reviews on Amazon.

“What’s fascinating about these stories is they present a window into the imaginations of writers from a century ago and other than the language at times appearing slightly formal, they are not much different than what would be expected from modern authors. For anyone looking for some Adventure, this book is a great place to start.”—Gordon Miller, Blogcritics, November 14, 2010

“The Best of Adventure is full of intrigue, action, mystery, danger, and daring—and this is just the first volume! The pulp magazine Adventure started 100 years ago. It became renowned for publishing top authors of the day, including H. Rider Haggard (King Solomon’s Mines) and Rafael Sabatini (Captain Blood). The stories range from covering the idyllic but perilous South Seas to the scavenger-dog infested shores of Constantinople.”

“Full of plot and mystery, these stories are bound to appeal to fans of adventure novels . . .”—Trina Carter, Foreword Reviews

“[Readers] like me will regard it as a treasure trove.” —National Review online

“Wow! Have I been having a blast reading this stunning collection from Black Dog Books . . unable to stop turning the pages.

“The Best of Adventure, Volume 1, containing stories from the first two years of Adventure Magazine (1910-1912), has caused me to lose a lot of sleep as I’ve lost myself within its pages. [It] has been an absolute joy.

“Editor Doug Ellis has chosen his stories wisely. Ellis’ introduction is excellent, giving us just enough about the authors and their stories to whet our appetite, and enough of a context to understand the world in which the stories were published.

“Black Dog Book’s packaging of this volume is also a pleasure. When further volumes of The Best of Adventure appear, I’m going to be first in line to get my copies.”—Paul Bishop, Bish’s Beat
